When looking for a towel to use on your car, golf clubs, around the house, or whatever….you hear about Microfiber towels. But what makes a microfiber towel so special? And why is it recommended to use microfiber towels compared to regular towels? Well here at Show Finish we will discuss this with you, to help you be as informed as possible when making your car care product selections.
We can begin by going over what a microfiber towel is, and what it’s made of. Microfiber towels are ones that are made of, you guessed it, microfibers! But what does that mean? Well a microfiber is usually made of a polyester/polyamide mix. The term “microfiber” comes from the fact that the fibers are extremely small. This is done on purpose as it creates a surface of many fibers that can be used to clean/dry the surface it is being used on.
What makes this material so special for our cars cleaning needs, is its ability to absorb moisture and pick up dust without scratching paint. Microfiber towels are great at soaking up any water that is on your car and make short work of drying after a wash. Also, they work great for dusting off your car after a quick drive or if your car has been sitting in the garage for a bit! They help to lift away and trap the dust within the fibers.
Science has helped improve the towel, by allowing microfiber towels be created. We can go into the full details of how and why, but it’s very complicated and one of those things we should leave to the scientists! In laymen’s terms, the small microfibers are able to bond to dirt much better than a regular cotton towel, which helps clean with less effort. At least that’s how I understand how it works! And aside from the better performance of microfiber towels, they are also better for you. What we mean by that, is that they are usually hypoallergenic. So, it is much more rare for someone to be allergic to a microfiber towel when compared to other types of cloths. Using microfiber towels also reduces the amount of cleaning detergents and solutions you would need to use, which also helps them be “healthier” as you don’t have to breathe in those noxious fumes that may come with different cleaning products!
Although microfibers for the most part are very similar, there are many different types of microfiber towels that are made to perform better at different tasks. For example, our microfiber wash mitt is perfect for holding soap/water and cleaning all surfaces of your car. Where our microfiber waffle weave towel can be used to do the same, but is recommended to be used to dry your car off, particularly the glass. This is where science comes in again, as a waffle weave microfiber towel is designed to wick and absorb water on the surface it touches. Then there are our “regular” microfiber towels, which come in two different sizes. Our 300 GSM microfiber towels are great for general use, where our 600 GSM plush microfiber towel is great for drying as well as polishing your car or bike. Now although all these towels are microfiber, you can see how slight variations can have them perform better depending on how they are used and ultimately makes them different.
